I used to ask the people who reported to me to summarize their goals in a similar form as this. I thought it helped us learn together. If I can assign it to someone else, I can do it myself:
The 5 best things about last week (OK, normally I would say "greatest accomplishments" but life has to be a little bigger than work):
- Added a new client project
- Confirmed an on-going client project
- Spent time working together with 3 different clients
- With Easter Monday a holiday, it was a four-day week
- I walked to work every morning in the warm, Spring sunshine
Last week's three greatest disappointments me:
- Got some, but still not enough time to move all the marketing along as fast as I want to
- I did just enough marketing to see how much more there is to do (smile)
- I got a big, bad cold on Tuesday night that haunted me through the weekend -- and this even after being so rested! (I know I was exposed to others who had the same cold. Ugh.)
What I learned that I am happy about:
I took just a few minutes to really connect personally with a few people where I was the communication laggard. And I received a few contacts from friends and colleagues (some different than those I initiated) that remind me of two important things: 1) life is a marathon -- it takes individuals and organizations years to make progress on even the most desired changes. Sometimes the processes working for change are not immediately visible. In the end, the people matter to me most and that's the reason to suffer the occasionally laughable, occasionally cry-able dilemmas we face organizationally. and 2) I might as well lighten-up even more sometimes. There will always be a long to-do list, obstacles, my impatience, and colds. :-)
