How many people have asked you so far this year if you made any New Year’s Resolutions? I try to avoid this question because when I have to truthfully admit I write new goals every December, I just don’t want to hear the groans and huffs of “Oh of course you would!”
Truth is, I gave up a long time ago on setting personal goals in the business sense of the word. Mine aren’t smart. They often aren’t quantitative. In business, we set goals in alignment with a strategy given to us. Then it’s easy.
In life, I think it’s much harder to set the direction.
My “goals” are really “directions.” For example this year, “Long table attitude” means remember to invite people to share with “spirit & heart” together personally and professionally. “jallé Studio concept” means remember to build my new office that I will take in February as a creative learning space AND remember act and work creatively in it. “Private life lived. Period.” means don’t forget to live your personal life even with so much energy going into a young business.
Anyway when I look at the bigger picture, I think times in my life evolves through themes. A few year’s back it was “restructure.” Then came “make the transition,” followed by “settle in.” This year feels like “build."
Once I "get" the theme, the details seem to sort themselves out after a while.
And I will need to remember to write 10 instead of 09.
