As I shuffled back to work from a late lunch on a cold, snow-spitting afternoon yesterday, I discovered the process of Christmas star removal just outside the office door. Not really motivating on a grey winter day, but the guys seemed happy enough that I noticed their efforts as I grabbed for my camera.
Maybe I should even feel depressed about the removal of holiday fun, but my spirited lunch companion and I had just said before we parted that it is January - so we really should just deal with the expected. Would be hypocritical to now whine like a child.
So instead I'll share the new German word I learned to describe it: "Matsch." Here used in context: Later that evening, I slogged in the grey "slushy mush" at the outskirts of Zurich, straight uphill home thinking, "Ugh! Matsch, Matsch, Matsch."
